How to export a Claude conversation to Markdown, PDF or JSON

Short answer: Claude's own export (Settings → Privacy → Export data) emails you a link to your whole account's history, which expires after 24 hours. For one conversation, copy it, print it to PDF, or save it as Markdown or JSON with an extension.

You have one long Claude conversation worth keeping: a design you worked out, a draft, a piece of research. Claude makes it easy to copy one reply and possible to export everything, and offers nothing in between.

The built-in options

  • Export data. On the web or in Claude Desktop, click your initials in the lower left, then Settings → Privacy → Export data. A download link arrives by email and expires 24 hours after it is sent. It cannot be started from the iOS or Android app, and on Team and Enterprise plans only the organisation's Primary Owner can run it. It covers every conversation at once, as data rather than a document you can read.
  • Copy. The copy button under each reply copies that reply. For a whole conversation it means a click per reply, and your own messages are copied separately.
  • Share. Creates a link to a snapshot of the conversation. Good for showing someone, but it is a page on Claude's site rather than a file you keep, and anyone with the link can read it.
  • Print to PDF. Ctrl+P or Cmd+P, then Save as PDF. Fine for short chats. Long ones print poorly, and artifacts and attached files do not come along.

What the account export does not give you

The archive is for keeping, not reading: finding one conversation in it takes a viewer or a script. It is also a snapshot. Anything you say after the export is not in it, so an export taken today is out of date tomorrow. And it cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. Which format to pick

  • Markdown to read or keep it. It opens in Obsidian, Notion or any text editor and keeps headings, lists and code blocks.
  • JSON when a program will read it: one record per message, with role, text and time.
  • PDF to send a fixed copy. Make it from the Markdown for a clean result.

How Tvara does it

One click on the minimap toolbar saves the open Claude conversation to your Downloads folder as Markdown or JSON, with headings, code fences and timestamps intact. When the page has not loaded the whole chat, Tvara fills in the rest from its local archive where it has it, and tells you which you got. Nothing is uploaded.

On Claude, one-click export is part of Pro, with a seven-day free trial. Exporting Tvara's whole local archive is free. Tvara on Claude · Exporting a ChatGPT chat
