TvaraRecover a deleted chat

Can you recover a deleted AI conversation?

Short answer: usually not, and not for long. The useful answer is about what to do before it happens.

What deletion actually does

On most assistants, deleting a conversation removes it from your interface immediately and from the provider's systems within a retention window — commonly around thirty days, sometimes less. During that window it is generally not recoverable by you. There is rarely a trash folder, and support usually cannot restore a specific conversation on request.

Things that delete conversations without you deciding to:

  • Account-level data controls. Turning off history, or enabling auto-delete after a period.
  • Temporary or incognito modes. Designed never to persist. Working in one and then wanting the transcript is a common and unrecoverable mistake.
  • Shared or team accounts. Someone else's cleanup is your loss.
  • Plan changes and retention policy updates. Rarer, but they happen, and the notice period is whatever the provider chooses.
  • A mis-click. The delete control is usually one menu away from rename.

The three things worth trying

  1. Request an account data export immediately. If the export is generated while the conversation is still within the retention window, it may be included. This is time-sensitive — hours matter.
  2. Check other devices before they sync. A phone or another browser that has not refreshed may still be showing the conversation. Copy the text out by hand now; do not reload the page first.
  3. Check your own copies. Anything you pasted elsewhere — a document, a ticket, a message to a colleague — is a copy that deletion did not reach.

If none of those apply, it is gone. That is worth knowing plainly rather than spending an afternoon on it.

The only real fix is before, not after

A conversation you have a copy of cannot be deleted out from under you. That is the whole argument for keeping your own archive, and it is why the interesting design question is not "how do I undo a delete" but "what should happen when the provider's copy disappears".

How Tvara handles it

A provider deleting a conversation does not delete Tvara's copy. When Tvara notices a chat has vanished from the site, it asks — in the page, where you are, not in a settings screen you would have to go and find — whether to keep the local copy or remove it too.

Choosing to delete is instant and reversible: the record is dropped straight away and a full copy is held aside for ten minutes, so a mis-click is survivable. Nothing is re-downloaded to restore it, because the provider no longer has it.

The underlying principle is simple: never lose what you wrote. A shrinking write never replaces a fuller record, and when the situation is ambiguous the copy is kept and you are asked.

Common questions

Can I recover a deleted ChatGPT conversation?

Usually not by yourself: there is no trash folder. Within the first hours, an account data export may still include it, and another device that has not synced yet may still show it. Copy the text out before reloading.

How long do AI providers keep deleted chats?

Commonly around thirty days in their own systems after you delete, but that copy is not available to you. The exact window is in each provider's privacy policy.

Can a temporary chat be recovered?

No. Temporary and incognito chats are designed not to be kept in your history, so there is nothing to recover afterwards.
