How to organise hundreds of AI conversations

Short answer: past a few dozen chats the sidebar cannot do it alone. Rename the conversations that matter, group work into projects where the platform has them, and rely on full-text search for everything else.

The sidebar was fine at thirty chats. At four hundred it is an undifferentiated list of auto-generated titles, and finding last month's work is archaeology.

Why the sidebar stops working

Titles are generated from your opening message. A conversation that started "quick question about dates" and ended up being the design of your whole scheduling system is filed under the quick question. The title describes the beginning; the value is at the end.

Ordering is by recency, which is not how you remember. You remember by project, by problem, by roughly-when. The list offers strict reverse-chronological, which matches none of those.

Folders are shallow or absent. Where they exist you have to file things at the moment you create them, which is the moment you know least about what the conversation will become.

Habits that genuinely help

  1. Rename at the end, not the start. The single highest-value habit. Thirty seconds when you finish, naming the conversation for what it concluded. It converts an unsearchable list into an index.
  2. Use a prefix convention. [proj] thing sorts and filters well even in a plain list, and it survives platforms that have no folders at all.
  3. Pin the three that are live. Most platforms allow it, most people do not use it. The working set is almost always tiny.
  4. Keep an index outside the platform. A plain document with a line and a link per conversation that mattered. Unglamorous and it beats every built-in feature.
  5. Let dead conversations stay dead. Most chats are single-use. Trying to organise all of them is why organising fails; organise the small fraction you will return to.

The limit of all of this

Every habit above is filing work you do by hand, on one platform at a time, and none of it survives you using a second assistant. Filing is also a prediction: you are guessing now which conversations you will want later, and you will guess wrong.

Search does not require the prediction. If you can find any conversation by its content in a second, organising it up front stops mattering.

How Tvara approaches it

Tvara does not add folders. It keeps a local copy of the conversations you open and makes the whole thing searchable by full text, across every supported platform at once — so a conversation you never filed and never renamed is still findable by a phrase you remember from inside it.

Search narrows as you type and runs against your own copy on your own machine, which is also why it reaches messages the page has unloaded. More on finding old chats.

Common questions

How do I organise my ChatGPT chats?

Rename each conversation when you finish it, for what it concluded; use a prefix such as [project]; pin the few that are live; and rely on full-text search for everything else.

How do I find an old chat when all the titles look the same?

Search by content, not title. Titles are generated from the first message; an archive searched by full text finds a chat by any phrase you remember from inside it.
